Do Dental Implants Require Bone Grafts to Work?

The loss of one or more teeth can have a negative effect on one’s confidence. A missing tooth can be replaced by the Wicker Park Cosmetic Dentist in a number of ways. The best approach can be a tooth implant. This implant is, of course, a false tooth that is attached to a piece of metal that has been set in the jawbone.

Some patients do not have enough bone to make that feasible. Many times the bone in the rear molar area is not supportive enough and, if the tooth the patient wants to replace has been missing for some time, the bone below that tooth may have eroded due to lack of stimulation. In these cases, a bone graft may be necessary.

Dental Implants and Bone Grafts

Bone can be grafted onto the jaw and that requires taking bone from another area of the body and placing it over the area at the replacement tooth site. It can take over six months to a year for the bone to be fully joined with the jaw. There may be an alternative to this procedure; however, and that would be to do a sub periosteal implant. This differs from the other implant in that the replacement tooth will rest on the underlying bone and not require fusion with that bone to work. These implants have many of the same advantages that the fused implant does.

They will be more permanent than a bridge or crown attached to adjacent teeth and they will make both eating and speaking much easier than if the patient had a partial denture. Certainly the fused implant will be preferable as it will stimulate the bone it is attached to keep it healthy, but the sub periosteal implant does take less time than an implant requiring a bone graft.

Bonding and Its Long History

There are many choices for improving the cosmetics of a person’s smile. One of the first of these options was bonding, which has quite a long history behind it. Today bonding is used to repair chipped teeth or to replace a metal filling with a more natural looking material.

Bonding is accomplished by placing a mixture of resins on the teeth. The color is made to be as close to the surrounding teeth as possible. Bonding in some of its uses is similar to veneers in what they both accomplish but bonding has been around a lot longer.

How Long Has Bonding Been Available?

Bonding was first introduced about 45 years ago. It was meant to be a dental adhesive that would restore teeth and prevent cavities, but there was a problem. These adhesives were placed directly on the enamel but didn’t adhere to it due to what was later named the smear layer interfering. This led to the material cracking and sometimes additional cavities developed on a tooth that had been bonded.

Dr. Michael Buonocore developed the idea that an acid should be used to etch some enamel off to promote the resins bonding to the teeth. Similar attempts by Dr. Buonocone to have them bond on the next layer of tooth – dentin – met with little success. There have been advancements in this process as well but many other products like veneers and tooth implants may make bonding agents being used with either material less used.

Bonding may still be a good option for whitening teeth or repairing chipped teeth.
