One of the best ways to keep smiling is to keep brushing and follow all the recommendations on dental hygiene from the American Dental Association. Here at the Wicker Park Dentist, we have plenty of experience with patients that have not followed these rules to the letter and may need a little refresher course for what is the best way to keep those dental appointments ending happily.
Brushing and Flossing Daily – The Cornerstone of Dental Hygiene
First the most common sense hygiene tip is easily remembered – brush for 2 minutes 2 times a day. The ADA even has an infographic that brings this message home. You have heard that you need to brush twice a day, but what is the best way to brush? Place a small amount of toothpaste on a soft brush about the size of a pea and brush up and down at a forty-five degree angle.
The horizontal method of brushing across the teeth may be done very aggressively and that may make patients feel they are doing a good job, but it will reduce the chance of cleaning between the teeth and stimulating the gums which is also important. Brush the inside of the teeth by putting the brush in a vertical position and be sure to reach back to those molars.
Flossing between the teeth should be done at least once a day and taking care to go around the base of the teeth can reduce plaque buildup at the gum line. Once you have finished with the beginning chores of brushing and flossing, it’s time to rinse with an ADA approved mouthwash with fluoride. This will also reduce plaque – the number one enemy of your teeth, especially when combined with sugary drinks and food. One way to also reduce plaque buildup is to reduce those unhealthy drinks and food from your diet.
